People are instantly intrigued by the concept of Green Burial and, attracted by its intrinsic simplicity, they invariably want to know more. Here are some of their questions:
People choose Green Burial for different reasons, some very personal. Whether the choice of natural burial is motivated by concern for the enviroment, a desire to be close to nature, or the appeal of a simpler, gentler funeral tradition, each experience is unique and profoundly moving. Grieving families are often apprehensive about the funeral process, but they invariably come away from the green burial process with a sense of satisfaction and peace.
Depending on the cause of death, among other circumstances, a viewing can be held. This is something that should be discussed with the funeral director.
It is usually possible to have a viewing without embalming, depending on the particular circumstances, and about which your funeral service provider can advise you.
Absolutely. In fact, we encourage this. In a case where family members have provided end-of-life care for a loved one who eventually passes away at home, continuing that care at home after death can be a very natural progression. This, of course, may not be right for everyone, but with a little guidance from a caring funeral director or home funeral consultant, it can provide a uniquely cathartic experience and be an important part of the grieiving process.
Embalming is an invasive, artificial procedure that retards the natural process by which the body is returned to the earth. Because it is an unnatural practice, embalming is neither appropriate nor acceptable for green burial as it is envisoined by the Green Burial Alliance.
Nothing. For some people it may be the right choice, and those people should have that option. However, the vision of green burial put forth by the Green Burial Alliance is burial in harmony with nature, where the objective is that the body return to the earth naturally, free of any obstacles that impede the natural process. The intrinsic purpose of embalming is to interfere with that process. This is not a judgment of embalming or of those who choose it--people must decide and choose for themselves the type of burial that is right for them.
Can Green Burial be done in any cemetery?
Only if the cemetery allows this practice. It is very important to know at the time of need what cemeteries allow green burial, and which one best fits your particular needs, so it's best to find one beforehand. People are understandably distraught when faced with making final arrangements for their loved one, and it's not an easy time to make important, irrevocable decisions. Doing your research ahead of time will make it easier to find the cemetery that best fits your final wishes. Some cemeteries have allocated space for green burial but are still a conventional cemetery, i.e., they allow embalmed bodies and require vaults in other sections. It is a personal decision whether your needs will be best met by a green burial preserve, or whether a conventional cemetery that allows natural burial will suffice.
Can we have a church service or Mass of Christian Burial?
Any type of service that the family desires is possible. If going into a church, a coffin would probably be required. Most funeral homes can provide a rental casket for that purpose.
First and foremost, people must make the neccesary arrangements to facilatate such a burial. Make a will and be sure trusted loved ones are aware of your wishes. Prearranging a funeral will help make your wishes clear, but the best way to ensure they will be followed is to execute a will. Records should always be kept where they can be found in case of an emergency. Tell someone you trust where they can find your important documents, including your instructions and other pertinent information.
States have requirements as to the depth of a burial so that the body is buried deep enough to ensure that potential intruders will be neither inclined nor able to disturb the grave.
Many people are devoted to their animal companions, and want to share eternity with them. Some Green Burial cemeteries offer this service.
