"Nina"
I will always remember the woman who lovingly cast hundreds of rose petals into her mother's coffin, tucking her for eternity into a fragrant crimson blanket. The day before the burial, she had painted the pine casket ebony, with a golden ankh emblazoned across the lid. The earthly remains of her beloved mother were laid to rest in nature's embrace, guarded by a natural fieldstone engraved with her name and graced with an ankh motif reminiscent of the one on her coffin. It was an act of love like no other, a joint undertaking by mother and daughter, a gift that transcended their earthly life by forging a connection to the next one.
"Embracing life in death"
On that beautiful summer day, we knew not what to expect as we were to bid farwell to our dearest friend. The thought of making such a journey to the Green Burial Preserve to fulfill his final wishes seemed fitting of the life he led. We knew his mind was never far from the nature he so loved despite living and working in the bustling city. As we made that final walk down the country lane to the gravesite we could not help but be embraced by the all-encompassing passage between life and death. During this fitting ritual we realized that this was more than a friend's passing. It was his way of embracing everlasting life by choosing such a place. It was the most profound experience anyone could ever imagine. We were able to participate in this goodbye to our dear friend and never felt a sense of sadness. To the contrary we felt an overwhelming sense of joy. As we made our journey back down that lane all you could hear was the sound of birds chirping. At that point we realized that our friend had given us a precious gift that will be everlasting. That was his gift of life after death. By making his choice, he provides a better tomorrow to future generations.
